Are you ready to beat the winter blues by staying cozy and stylish?

This Winter Wardrobe Essentials List will help you streamline your winter wardrobe by allowing you to identify some must-have items you need in order to stay stylish and cozy all season long.

This is not an exhaustive list of winter essentials for women. I recommend using this list as a guide in addition to identifying your lifestyle needs and style preferences.

I have also included a downloadable Winter Wardrobe Essentials Checklist at the end of this post to help you identify any gaps.

Winter Wardrobe Essentials For Women

Tops For Winter

1. Basic Tops

Be sure to have your basic wardrobe pieces together, since they'll serve as your foundation. Consider camis, tanks, tees, and tops. You should strive to have a solid mix of basic tops in a variety of colors and fabrics to ensure you can take any outfit from day to night.

2. Sweaters

Did someone say sweater weather? Winter and fall are synonymous with sweaters. Ensure your wardrobe is stocked with a few cozy sweater styles if you are a sweater lover. From heavy knits to light knits, cashmere to cable knits, sweaters come in a variety of fabrics, weights, and styles. Wear your sweaters with jeans, trousers, and skirts, or layer them over dresses.

3. Sweatshirts & Hoodies

Your winter wardrobe should also include fleece crewnecks and hoodies. Wear your hoodies and sweatshirts with sweatpants for a complete ensemble, or break it up with jeans or even a skirt for an elevated sporty look.

4. Button Up Shirts

Crisp white button-up shirts are a must-have choice since they can be dressed up or down. Whether you layer them under knit sweaters, cardigans, or vests or wear them alone, button-up shirts look stylish in countless ways.

Bottoms For Winter

5. Leggings

While you most likely won't wear leggings on their own during winter, they are useful for layering under your jeans, sweats, and trousers.

6. Jeans

Jeans are often the go-to bottoms in winter and a year-round wardrobe staple. Keep a suitable selection of your favourite jeans on hand for the winter months. Mom jeans, skinny jeans, and straight jeans are some classic jeans styles. Make your jeans look stylish with a blazer and boots or go casual with a fleece crewneck and sneakers.

7. Sweatpants & Joggers

Sweatpants and joggers are convenient for running errands or on those days you're in need of some comfy clothing. Fleece sweats do an amazing job of providing warmth and coziness in the colder months. You'll definitely want to have a few pairs of sweatpants and joggers in your closet.

8. Trousers

In addition to your denim collection, ensure you have a few pairs of trousers you can wear throught out the winter. Aim to have a balance of everyday trousers you can style from day to night, such as leather and wool blend pants.

9. Midi-Skirts

Skirts in winter? Yes! Actually, this depends on a few factors, the biggest one being your winter commute. Skirts, however, are a nice way to stay stylish while taking a break from pants every now and then. When it comes to wearing skirts in the winter, you should pair them with warm leggings or nylons and high boots to stay warm.

10. Knit Dresses

Dresses, just like skirts are also a nice break from trousers and jeans in the winter. Choosing warm knit dresses is key when deciding to wear dresses during colder months. With thick nylons and warm boots, you can complete your outfit with any length of your choice.

Jackets/Layers For Winter

11. Cardigans & Vests

Cardigans and vests are great for layering with your basics such as tanks and button-up shirts and provide you with more winter outfit options. Fine, chunky, cable knit, wool and cashmere are a few of the styles and fabrics you can choose from.

12. Blazers

Regardless of the time of year, blazers are always a must-have, and they are perfect for elevating any outfit no matter the occasion. You can style your blazers in the winter by layering them with cozy knits, hoodies, and your favorite turtleneck tops and sweaters.

13. Wool Coat

Wool coats, such as black or camel-colored ones, are a winter wardrobe staple. Investing in a wool coat that can be styled with other wardrobe staples is essential. You can even opt for a teddy faux fur or shearling coat for a more elevated look.

14. Puffer or Parkas

You can't survive winter without a winter puffer or parka. You should invest in a quality winter jacket that will last 3-4 winters, as well as one that's versatile. Make sure to consider material, down insulation, length, and temperature resistance when choosing a material. For versatility stick to neutral and basic colors such as black, gray, and green.

Shoes For Winter

15. Sneakers

Sneakers are a wardrobe staple year-round and you don't always have to break the bank for a good pair. For those not-so-snowy winter days, sneakers are nice for comfort. Opt for winter-friendly sneakers such as mid or high-top sneakers with good grip or lugged soles.

16. Classic Booties

Owning a pair of classic black boots that you can dress up or down is another winter wardrobe essential. Depending on your style you can opt for knee-high or ankle-length boots that are versatile. Suede or leather boots can take your winter outfit from day to night.

17. Winter Boots

You should invest in a good pair of winter boots that will keep your feet warm and dry. Ensure that your winter boots are waterproof, insulated, or lined and have proper traction for those slippery winter days.

Accessories For Winter

18. Hats, Scarves & Gloves

Winter outfits would not be complete without winter accessories. Ensure you have your winter hats, scarves, and gloves to keep warm and protect exposed skin from the cold.

19. Socks & Tights

A good pair of socks and nylons can keep your toes and feet warm. In the winter, nylons are your best friend if you don't want to give up wearing skirts and dresses. Make sure you have a variety of styles on hand, whether plain or patterned.
